Though it will be primarily live-action (but you can be sure of spectacular visual effects and CGI aliens), Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise have announced plans to pool resources to produce a new version of HG Wells’ 1898 classic The War Of The Worlds, according to Variety, via Dark Horizons. Previous incarnations include a risible television series and the blockbuster movies Independence Day and Mars Attacks!, which shared many similar thematic elements. The well-known book was more straight-forwardly translated into a memorable radio play by Orson Welles, and as a fantastic 1953 feature film produced by stop-motion animation pioneer George Pal and director Byron Haskin (Disney’s Treasure Island).
