As expected, Sony’s Spider-Man 2 has smashed records to become the film with the biggest opening box office numbers. JoBlo.com reports that Spidey has broken Matrix Reloaded‘s 6-day take of $146.7m and also beaten Shrek 2‘s recent 4-day holiday cume of $95.6m. From last Wednesday’s day of release to this Monday, the superhero blockbuster has pulled in an astonishing $180.1m. One of the only records the new film did not break was for the best 3-day weekend, a record maintained by…the original Spider-Man!

Slipping down the charts finally is Shrek 2, with $7.9m at number seven for a $410.2m total, while Garfield: The Movie is just clawing on to the number ten spot with a $3.6m take, bringing its total to $63.6m – not a smash hit, but not the disaster many were expecting. Both films have just started their international rollouts, which will be looking to match and double their domestic figures respectively.
