Toon Zone points towards the first English-language review of El Cid: The Legend, a $9 million animated feature produced in Spain by Filmax Animation, that has appeared at Variety (via Yahoo). Jonathan Holland calls the film “engaging, if unadventurous, [it] succeeds as lighthearted kids’ entertainment, but refuses to break through into darker, more challenging terrain, which would have made it more appealing to adults. Though technically accomplished, visually opulent and telling a ripping yarn at a vibrant pace, the toon only comes into its visual own in the richly hued outdoor scenes, which permit some eye-catching games with light and shadow”.
