Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp has announced a new system that could speed up the time it takes to convert traditional movie theaters over to digital projection. Currently, the industry is tied to Texas Instruments’ DLP approach, but Sony (well known for bucking trends and starting their own) have developed their own take on film-less cinema and claims theirs is a cheaper alternative which offers twice the resolution of DLP. As owner of Hollywood studio Columbia, Sony sees value in promoting the system, which would mean digitally completed films like Spider-Man would provide non-degrading image quality for repeat screenings of startling clarity. This news is particularly interesting for animation audiences, as it means films will look that much more sharper and viewable exactly as the filmmakers envisioned.
