Box Office Guru and Coming Soon! report that stomping into 3,737 North American theaters on Wednesday, Shrek 2 grossed $11,768,000 in its first day of release, thus beating the record for largest Wednesday opening for an animated film by more than $1.5 million. DreamWorks will release Shrek 2 into 426 more theaters on Friday. Thus, with a total of 4,163 theaters, Shrek 2 will become the first movie to play in more than 4,000 theaters simultaneously. DreamWorks distribution president Jim Tharp stated that the opening day audience for the film was 60% family and the non-family section was equally split between males and females in addition to those over and under age 25. According to exit polls, over 90% found Shrek 2 to be either “excellent” or “very good,” with 82% saying they would definitely recommend it.
