It appears that Shrek 2 is going to have no problem with critics, if these early reviews reveal anything. Four positive reviews have already popped up at Rotten Tomatoes. Sean Conover at Jax Movies gives the film an “A,” stating, “Shrek 2 is as good, if not better, than the original.” The EDGE Boston‘s David Foucher gives it an “A-,” judging that, “It’s thematically identical to its predecessor, but Shrek 2 is still a hysterical knockout of a film. Fun, stylish, and totally irresistible.” “A-” is the grade that the movie gets from Gabriel Shanks at Mixed Reviews, as the critic declares, “More than a worthy successor to the original, and more than just a modern-day fairy tale.” Hero Realm‘s Stefan Halley believes, “Everyone will be laughing so hard through most of the movie that you’ll have to see it twice to hear everything that’s going on,” thus giving the film a “4.5/5.” However, Quint at Ain’t It Cool News is not quite as enthusiastic as the previous critics, as he writes, “Will Shrek 2 be dated in this time next year? I guarantee it. That’s the pity of these movies… Dreamworks’ animated films seem to always go for the joke, not the heart.” Nonetheless, Quint does add that, “If you absolutely love the original film, you’ll absolutely love this one.” Shrek 2 opens in US theaters this Wednesday, May 19, 2004.
