DreamWorks’ Shrek 2 opens today on 3,737 screens according to Box Office Mojo. MSNBC says that “whatever was wrong with Shrek – and there were more weaknesses than its beloved status would suggest – has been eradicated or improved upon with Shrek 2, a rare example of a sequel that’s better than the original”. CNN concurs saying “Shrek 2 is a Hollywood rarity: a sequel every bit as good – if not better – than the original”. Reviewing teammates Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper like the film, but don’t agree on the comparison with the original. Ebert says “Shrek 2 is bright, lively and entertaining, but it’s no Shrek. Maybe it’s too much to expect lightning to strike twice”; while Roeper believes that “like Toy Story 2 and the Lord of the Rings sequels, Shrek 2 is that rare adventure follow-up that doesn’t let you down”.
