For those interested in the technological details of Sony’s new digital theater projectors, the Digital Producer has more on how the 4K resolution system works. To put things in perspective, films such as Toy Story or Shrek 2 are created at 2K, and transferred to film for standard projection. The 4K route doubles the amount of resolution, and by using smaller pixels increases the sharpness and clarity. “For example, on a 27-foot wide, 16:9 screen, each pixel is only about the size of the letter ‘e’ in Liberty on a quarter” says Tom Mykietyn, director of content creation for Sony Electronics. The Sony development is an important one, since the lower cost and advanced image should lead to a real change in the way we watch our movies – especially animated titles – in the future.
