Jim Hill looks back at the careers of two of Disney’s best directors, John Musker and Ron Clements, on their last day working for Disney. The pair kickstarted the second Golden Age of Animation in the late 1980’s with The Great Mouse Detective and The Little Mermaid. They went on to direct Aladdin, Hercules, and Treasure Planet. One of Hill’s sources says “the Mouse House supposedly opted not to renew Ron’n’John’s contracts because their last picture (2002’s Treasure Planet) had performed so poorly at the box office”. The two have apparently already landed on their feet with another source saying they are “already in the running to direct a major animated release for an independent studio… based on a famous comic strip”.
