Demonstrating that the DVD for a movie is now very much part of the actual film’s production, we can exclusively bring you a description and shots of the menus for DreamWorks’ still-in-theaters Shrek 2, the biggest hit of the year! Follow this link for a peek at the upcoming disc, which looks to include two commentary tracks, featuring directors Kelly Asbury and Conrad Vernon on one, and producer Aron Warner and editor Mike Andrews on the other:
Arriving in stores on November 5, it is unclear at this point if Shrek 2 will be following its predecessor as a 2-disc set, with fullscreen and widescreen versions of the movie being the centrepiece of each disc. Unlike the first film’s 1.78:1 transfer, Shrek 2’s widescreen edition will present the film in true theatrical 1.85:1 ratio (notice the slivers of black along the North and South of the image):
Going for more of the pop-culture references as featured in the film itself, the disc’s animated menu kicks off with a Brady Bunch-styled line up of characters, with Donkey suggesting his role should be expanded and the film re-titled to reflect this. The motor-mouth ass rolls off one after the other, choice selections being Shrek 2: Day Of the Donkey, Shrek 2: Too Fast Too Donkey, Shrek 2: The Fellowship Of The Donkey, Shrek 2: The Donkey King, Shrek 2: Donkey Reloaded and Shrek 2: The Real Jack-ass Movie. The others eventually get him to clam up, after which everyone just looks about feeling rather awkward. Keep an eye on Puss In Boots, who steels the show as usual just by doing nothing.
Links to other sections of the disc branch from this main menu, including New From DreamWorks Animation (previews of upcoming features), Larry King’s Far Far Away Idol (similar to Shrek’s swamp karaoke session) and DreamWorks Kids (additional activities).
“We may as well give them what they want”, says Prince Charming before chomping away at his food on the Audio Options. No mention of DTS as featured on the first Shrek’s disc (another hint of separate or another edition to follow?), though we do get English and French Dolby 5.1 as well as English and Spanish 2.0 Surround, plus the two commentary tracks:
Subtitles, accompanied with a “Hello!” from the King of Far Far Away, will be available in English, French and Spanish:
Finally, the Fairy Godmother introduces the animated Scene Index menus:
The Shrek 2 DVD will be available from DreamWorks Home Entertainment on November 5, 2004.
