Check out Jerry Beck’s online version of a recent Variety article on the upcoming Curious George film. The most significant part of this article for the animation industry is the fact that they mention that they did try computer-animated tests of the inquisitive simian and none of them looked quite right (they tried puppetry as well) so they opted to go for the traditional two-dimensional, hand-drawn look for this particular feature. This should be proof sufficient that the style of animation used all depends on the aesthetic needs of the imagery for any animated movie or short. Just as Pixar’s Toy Story movies proved that the old-fashioned Woody and the new-fangled Buzz Lightyear can peacefully co-exist and both have a child’s affection so can old-fashioned hand-drawn animation and new-fangled computer animation do likewise.
