Following a previous report that stated that Universal had optioned Kate DiCamillo’s award-winning book The Tale of Despereaux: Being The Story Of A Mouse, A Princess, Some Soup, And A Spool Of Thread comes news that Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville) will serve as the director of the animated feature, according to Variety. Seabiscuit producers Gary Ross and Allison Thomas will produce through their Larger Than Life Productions banner. No writer has been hired yet. Despereaux will be based closely on the book, which follows several unlikely heroes: a misfit mouse who prefers reading books to eating them, the princess that he cherishes, a bumbling servant girl who longs to be a princess, and an unhappy rat who schemes to leave the darkness of the dungeon.
