nightmare (33k image)

It was ten years ago this weekend that audiences were first treated to Tim Burton’s amazing stop-motion animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas, a magical tale that tells of what happens when Halloween meets Christmas! The big Disney holiday season feature offering was originally going to be King Of The Jungle, a small film that you may have heard about under its release name The Lion King, which was eventually completed the following summer. As with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Disney execs were a little worried that audiences wouldn’t accept the Disney brand name on such an innovative, PG-rated film, and despite the fact that early teasers went out with the traditional castle logo intact, it was actually put out under the Touchstone label.

Over the years, Burton’s Nightmare has gained cult status and enjoys frequent re-runs at Disney’s El Capitan Theater, where it just finished an exclusive engagement. For those not lucky enough to see the film on the big screen, Touchstone’s Special Edition DVD offers up an amazing amount of quality supplemental material (previously available on the deluxe CAV LaserDisc box set), including deleted scenes, a documentary featurette, commentary from director Henry Selick, Tim Burton’s early Disney films, Vincent and Frankenweenie, and a DTS audio track – perfect family fare for a spooky night in!
