In news that will surprise many–given that a sixth season had already been put into production–, Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been cancelled, the HD Room is reporting. The series was expected to air on Disney XD in the future, but in an effort to put a focus on getting Star Wars: Episode 7 into theaters, the show has been put to an end. Unfinished story arcs from the series are expected to be distributed as “bonus content” somewhere, but the studio wouldn’t get specific on those details. In other news, the Star Wars spoof series Star Wars Detours–from Robot Chicken creator Seth Green–has also been turned to the dark side, with all production on the show being put on hold for an unknown ammount of time. The only good news for Star Wars fans to come from this is that a new cartoon series was announced that will take place during a “time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming,” although, again, the studio wouldn’t offer any details.

UPDATE: Supervising director Dave Filoni now has a video in which he thanks the fans of the series, explains why it’s coming to a close, and offers a peek of the “bonus content” coming in the future, stating that “the best is yet to come.”
