Possibly destined to become one of the biggest money losers in recent Hollywood memory, Disney’s Mars Needs Moms made only $6.9 million during its opening weekend, a fraction of what it cost to make. When marketing costs are brought into play, it’s quite likely that the motion capture animated feature cost as much as $200 million for the studio, something that will be virtually impossible for it to make back in theaters. “The right audience came, but not in the numbers we needed,” said Disney worldwide distribution president Chuck Vane. “I’m disappointed for the filmmakers. They spent at least two years of their lives making a terrific movie that people won’t see.”
