The Super-Dimension Fortress Macross TV series, which went out-of-print this past December, is being re-released by the North American license holder, Harmony Gold. (Source: AnimeonDVD.com)
A few years back, the domestic anime licensing company, AnimEigo, purchased the rights to the series, restored, and subtitled the ENTIRE 36-episode series for the first time for the American market! The restoration was for its time the most extensive TV restoration project done outside of a major Hollywood studio. The eventual DVD set was also one of the few times that it could be said that an R1 release of an anime series was BETTER than its R2 counterpart.
AnimEigo's rights to Macross lapsed this past December and very little of their stock of DVDs is left in stores and online.
Harmony Gold, however, has planned to re-release the entire Macross series using the footage redone by AnimEigo with the subtitle script created by AnimEigo. They are in effect re-releasing the AnimEigo DVDs in a new box with new artwork at a much lower pricepoint... $124.95 . Not bad considering the TV series probably cost $500 to collect on DVD in Japan and retailed for CLOSE to $300 when AnimEigo released its boxset nearly 4 years ago!
Macross remains a high-mark of anime and one of the few anime series that retains fandom and public interest after 2 decades. The 36 episodes of Macross were reworked and adapted into the international animated hit, Robotech, which has also seen several releases on DVD...
P.S. -- Due to all the editting, it's impossible to release a bilingual version of Robotech that has the Japanese language versions of Macross, Mospeada, and Southern Cross. There's also the not-so-little-known fact that the Japanese rights' holders to the footage doesn't WANT an English translation of Macross, Mospeada, and Southern Cross to compete with Robotech. This is why the original Japanese versions of these shows are only available subtitled in the United States.
Restored video footage for ALL 3 series HAS been used in the Robotech Remastered video release, however.
