New Goon footage from Comic Con

MTV currently features a clip of footage from The Goon that was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con recently. According to the article, the clip was being showcased in part to show off the film to studios who could potentially finance the production of the Blur Studios project. Currently being produced by David Fincher, the script for the movie was written by Eric Powell, who created the comic book the film is based on. Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti will be voicing the Goon and his sidekick Franky, the two characters featured in the clip.

The first teaser trailer for the big-screen adaption of the classic cartoon series, The Smurfs, can now be viewed online at Trailer Addict. Directed by Raja Gosnell, the movie hits theaters on July 29th, 2011.

Rango teaser now online

A rather surreal teaser trailer for the upcoming animated flick Rango has recently surfaced on the net, and can be viewed on Itunes Movie Trailers. The film, which follows the story of a chameleon with and identity-crisis, stars the voice talents of Johnny Depp and is directed by Gore Verbinski. Rango hits theaters on March 18th, 2011.

Early Despicable Me reviews are positive

Two early reviews for the upcoming animated film Despicable Me can now be read on Variety as well as Reuters. Both articles praise the flick as a solid, enjoyable movie, though they claim it falls slightly short of being perfect. Despicable Me opens in theaters on July 9th, 2010.

First look at Day & Night

Pixar Talk currently features a brand-new still from the upcoming short film Night & Day, which will be debuting alongside Toy Story 3 on June 18th. Combining both traditional 2D animation as well as CGI, writer/director Teddy Newton’s short follows the antics of two characters named Day and Night. The short is produced by Kevin Reher, with the musical score by Michael Giacchino.

Mighty Mouse movie back in development

According to the LA Times, a Mighty Mouse movie is once again in the works at Paramount, though the studio is still looking for a writer and director for the flick. A Mighty Mouse movie has been in development at the studio for several years, with many different writers attempting to craft a script for the film in the past. However, with the success of Alvin And The Chipmunks proving classic cartoon characters can still bring in big bucks on the big screen, Paramount has put the creation of Mighty Mouse on the fast track.

First Yogi Bear images

The Movie Insider has what appear to be the first images from the upcoming Yogi Bear live-action/CGI hybrid. Included on the site are an early poster for the film as well as character shots of Yogi and Boo-Boo. Starring Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, Yogi Bear hits theaters on December 17th, 2010.

Dragon tops box office

According to Variety, DreamWork’s How To Train Your Dragon topped the box office last weekend with an estimated $43.3 million intake. While these numbers didn’t exactly signify a mega-hit, the gross was enough to knock Disney’s Alice In Wonderland from first place and met industry expectations. 3D showings of Dragon helped boost its opening weekend, with 65% of ticket sales coming from these screenings of the film. Overseas, the movie is doing well, with an accumulation of around $42 million thus far. Marketers hope that upcoming spring breaks for schoolchildren and the Easter holiday will aid in helping Dragon overcome its $165 million budget, though the release of Clash Of The Titans next weekend may cause a drop in the number of 3D theaters the animated film is showing in.

How To Train Your Dragon opens today

DreamWork’s new animated flick, How To Train Your Dragon, opens today on over 7,000 screens, including those in IMAX theaters. 2,175 of these screens are equipped with 3D, though this number is not a record due to Avatar and Alice In Wonderland still playing in some theaters. Reviews for the new film are extremely positive, garnering a 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the highest rating for an in-house DreamWorks animated movie to date. Box office predictions for Dragon’s opening weekend range from between $38 million and $48 million, a large portion of which will most likely come from 3D screenings.

Turkeys set for 2011; Rats of NIMH on the way

According to Variety, a new animation house titled Bedrock Studios has plans for creating family-friendly films with budgets under $35 million. Their first project, centered around a pair of turkeys who discover a time machine, is currently in pre-production, with Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson voicing the lead characters. Set to hit theaters sometime in 2011, the film should be the first in a line-up of features the studio has planned, which also includes Rats of NIMH, A Wrinkle in Time, and Dinosaur Bob.
