Dragon soars, but not high enough to fly over Jump Street

How to Train Your Dragon 2 got off to a solid start this weekend with a take of $50 million, Forbes[1] is reporting. It was not, however, able to claim the top spot, as 22 Jump Street surprised with a massive $60 million debut. Some may see this as comparable to when Kung Fu Panda 2 opened againstĀ The Hangover: Part II with similar results, but in Dragon’s case, there are no animated movies in theaters until Planes: Fire and Rescue comes out in mid-July, so it more or less has the marketplace to itself until then. Dragon 2 also earned an “A” CinemaScore from audiences on Friday, so it should also do well in the word-of-mouth department. Final figures are due tomorrow.
