Today we’re bringing to your attention the third of the five nominees for the Best Animated Short Oscar, Head Over Heels. Written and directed by Timothy Reckart, the film is about a married couple who after many years have literally grown apart (he resides on the floor and she on the ceiling) and they now live separate, parallel lives. “The idea for Head Over Heels jumped out at me from a 1632 painting by Rembrandt called The Philosopher in Meditation. There’s a spiral staircase in the corner that is symmetrical, as if it could also be used by someone living on the ceiling. I imagined two people sharing a staircase like that and began to wonder who they were and how they ended up that way. These characters developed into Walter and Madge”. Watch this short below, and catch up on some of the other nominees (Adam and Dog, Paperman) as well.
