Before and after visual effects

Unless you’re the kind of junkie who watches every special feature on your Blu-rays and DVDs you may be surprised at how pervasive visual effects are in movies. I’m not talking about the giant robot terrorizing San Francisco or the flying superhero blasting apart an asteroid. Chris Godfrey, the VFX supervisor on The Great Gatsby, recently posted a before and after reel[1] of some of his team’s work that not only shows off their talents on the big set pieces, but reveals how even the most mundane backgrounds are just cinematic illusions.
