Hank Azaria joins Smurfs cast as Gargamel

Entertainment Weekly[1] is reporting that funnyman Hank Azaria is set to voice the evil wizard Gargamel in the live action/animated Smurfs movie. The key word to note there is “voice,” which strongly indicates that Gargamel will in fact be an animated human in a live action world. Azaria, of course, is no stranger to animation, having voiced several characters on The Simpsons and providing the voice of Bartok the bat in Anastasia. On the TV series, the late Paul Winchell was the voice behind Gargamel, a character who wanted nothing more than to capture his lovable little blue enemies. The Smurfs is currently set for release on August 3rd, 2011.
