After only a few weeks of release, Avatar has already accomplished what only a few films in the history of cinema have done, crossing the $1 billion mark in worldwide receipts yesterday and becoming one the highest grossing movies of all time. The James Cameron epic surpassed The Dark Knight’s worldwide gross yesterday and is currently only behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and, of course, Cameron’s own Titanic.  In addition to this, the film also had the greatest January weekend ever in the US, besting the opening of the 2008 J.J. Abrams monster movie Cloverfield with an impressive take of $68 million.
