The Hollywood Reporter[1] published an interesting article this morning outlining the huge success of Disney merchandise, driven by franchises such as Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Cars and the Disney Princess line. The record $30 billion-plus global revenues expected for this fiscal year represent 5 times the retail sales generated by Warner Bros. Consumer Products (Batman, Harry Potter, Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo…) and 6 times Nickelodeon’s (SpongeBob SquarePants). For Disney, the $30 billion target for this year-40% of which come from North America-compares to $13 billion just five years ago. The Mouse House expects sales of Disney merchandise to surpass $40 billion in about three years and $50 billion over the next five to seven years. The Jonas Brothers, who star in the Camp Rock movie that premieres June 20th on the Disney Channel, are being looked at as teh next possible major tween franchise for the studio.
