Studio Ghibli goes independent

Yomiuri On-Line[1] reports that Studio Ghibli will leave major publishing company Tokuma Shoten Publishing Co. by the end of March, in order to become an independent corporation. Establishing in Koganei, Tokyo, the company will have director Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki serving as two of its board members. Established in 1985 as a subsidiary of Tokuma Shoten, Studio Ghibli became a division of the company when it was absorbed in 1997, because of Tokuma Shoten’s failing business. However, large-scale restructuring to Tokuma Shoten’s publishing division now allows the publisher to support itself without the animation division, thus making Studio Ghibli clearance to break free. Thanks to ‘Wolf Tooth’ at the Animated-News Forum[2] for the heads up!
