Disney's summer blockbuster found in Princess Diaries 2?

Variety[1] indicates that Disney may have finally found their summer blockbuster in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. According to a studio representative, the sequel to 2001’s sleeper hit grossed between $8 million and $9 million on Wednesday, when the film opened. This would make Princess Diaries 2 have the third largest Wednesday opening of the year, only behind Spider-Man 2 and Shrek 2. Though the film has not received high marks from critics, most agree that it will please young females, the audience that it is intended for. That, along with a lack of competition in the genre, may make Princess Diaries 2 the hit Disney has been needing all year. [paid subscription required for Variety]
